Social Housing and Affordable Housing
      "ARE NOT"
Homeless Housing!

The Federal, Provincial and Municipal Governments announce multiple Affordable Housing units to be built! BUT - BUT - BUT Social Housing and Affordable Housing are both housing that is deemed affordable to those with a household income at or below the median income. Affordable housing is (rental and ownership housing) and is one of the components that make up a healthy housing stock along with emergency shelters, transitional housing, social housing and market housing. However, Social Housing and Affordable Housing are NOT homeless housing. Federal, Provincial and Municipal Governments offer mortgages, interest free funds, subsidized rents to allow "for profit" developers to produce the inventory that they build and own. In Canada, housing is considered “affordable” if it costs less than 30% of a household’s before-tax income. Income is Necessary to Qualify. Meanwhile 260,000 to 300,000 individuals are homeless in Canada.

Our Mission

Homeless Housing Inc. sees 'Social Housing' and ‘Affordable Housing’ (for profit) being the priority of the Federal, Provincial and Municipal Governments to provide up to 3,000 units and ‘Homeless Housing First’ (for non-profits) as entirely different and less important as only 30 homeless units are scheduled for Winnipeg as stated by the Provincial Government in early 2025.

Our Mission is to raise funds by donations to ‘gift’ to capable non-profit organizations that can build or renovate permanent self-contained homeless housing units and also provide all the necessary day-to-day services that the occupants require.

Our Areas of Focus

Raise

We actively seek financial support from community partners and individuals to fund the development of permanent housing solutions.

We work closely with the City of Winnipeg, the Province of Manitoba, and local organizations to ensure our efforts align with the Master Plan for addressing homelessness.

Collaborate

Support

We provide funds for the construction or renovation of downtown infill housing units that meet the needs of vulnerable populations, adhering to the Houston model.

Empower

By creating stable housing, we contribute to building a stronger, more inclusive community where individuals can thrive and regain their independence.

The Homeless face many issues:
  • Harsh Climate
  • Limited Shelter Options
  • Safety Concerns
  • Health Challenges
  • Social Stigma
  • Limited Resources
  • Potential theft of belongings
  • Legal and Administrative     Hurdles
Solution:
Help provide 'Housing First' to get them off the streets out of the Parks out of tents and into self-contained housing units, not just beds in a Rooming House.
   Homeless Housing Inc.
By understanding some of the challenges of homelessness and the current 'band-aid solutions' we desire to raise funds in order to create an environment where individuals can heal, grow, and regain their sense of purpose. With 'Housing First', hot food, social services, clothing and an address where they can begin to rebuild their lives within our communities.”
An income is mandatory for an individual to apply for a permanent unit of "SOCIAL HOUSING" or   "AFFORDABLE HOUSING" 30% of their household pre taxable income is the 'benchmark'.  So, say 40 hours of work per week at $20 per hour= $960 monthly to qualify for one of the 100 (yes 100) units available in Winnipeg for under $1,000 monthly.
The Homeless don't have taxable income and just DON'T QUALIFY for 'Social or Affordable Housing'.

Homeless Housing Inc. has emailed the following as notice of our Mission: Wab Kinew, Premier of Manitoba; Tessa Blaikie Whitecloud, Premier’s Senior Advisor on Ending Chronic Homelessness; Bernadette Smith, Housing, Addictions and Homelessness Minister; Scott Gillingham, Mayor of Winnipeg; Earl Funk, Mayor of Steinbach; Larry Johannson, Mayor of Selkirk; Jason Whitford, President and CEO of End Homelessness in Manitoba; Marion Willis, Executive Director, St. Boniface Street Links; Paul Loewen, Community and Education Coordinator Siloam Mission; Julianne Aitken, Interim CEO Siloam Mission; Cindy Titus, Communications Manager, Main Street Project; Marina R. Homeless Stories

A young Filipino man started his 'Housing First ' project under this parking lot overpass - and, with a Rona close by he used 'salvaged' materials and persistence to build his 'home'. However, the City of Winnipeg decided the structure was on city property and needed to be demolished. The Good News was that the Filipino Community raised funds to fly him back home to the Philippines -- a successful story for one individual just trying to survive.

A typical river bank encampment where there are no basic facilities and the occupants need to plan when they eat so that simple bathroom breaks don't leave their possessions available for theft at night. Food 'budgets' can be as low as about $3.00 per day with non-perishable food such as a jar of peanut butter. Similar encampments exist in dog parks, public streets, bus shelters, vacant buildings and under bridges. Your donation can provide some housing units to help get these individuals out of Public places where they can start to rebuild their lives.

Homelessness is critical in our  cities and 'warehousing' them like criminals isn't the solution.

Houston Texas implemented the 'Housing First' approach and were able to place 33,000 homeless individuals into housing units. Manitoba has significantly fewer homeless, so let's take the Houston approach "Housing First" and get housing for those in need of getting out of tents and encampments and raise funds for actual housing units in our cities of Winnipeg, Steinbach and Selkirk.

Homeless Housing Inc. follows the “Houston” model which is simply working together to create self contained housing units by Advocating for 'housing first' and by working in collaboration with "Your Way Home" which is Manitoba’s Plan to End Chronic Homelessness announced by Wab Kinew for the Province of Manitoba in February 2025 to provide permanent housing solutions and Tessa Blaikie Whitecloud is the Premier’s Senior Advisor on Ending Chronic Homelessness.
